Personal History

Musical and Educational Background (1939 – 1957)

Began private piano instructions in 1943 at the age of 4.

Began brass studies in 1948.

Performed personal recital for FRED WARING at the age of 10.

Continued classical piano studies for 8 years till 1951.

In 1952:

Started playing for professional engagements at the age of 13.

From 1952 – 1957:

Played with various school bands.
(stage bands, concert bands, marching bands, stage plays and small groups)
During this period, increased studies to include playing sousaphone, trumpet, baritone horn, tuba, french horn, and valve trombone.

In 1954:

Was a winning contestant in HORACE HEIDT amateur talent show.
In the same year, was offered acceptance at CURTIS INSTITUTE OF MUSIC in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

From 1952 – 1957:

Won many awards in various musical competitions in Pennsylvania.

Professional Music Background

From 1957 – 1964:

Accepted into NAVY MUSIC PROGRAM in June, 1957.

Attended NAVY SCHOOL OF MUSIC in Washington, D.C from 1957 to 1958.

Studied advanced musical training in playing, musical theory, arranging, composition and conducting.

Began writing musical arrangements for large and small bands.

From 1958 – 1959:

Toured with Navy Band in Far East performing in conjunction with President Eisenhower’s “people to people” program. Many of my arrangements were a part of our concert program. Performed in Hong Kong, Japan, Formosa, Okinawa, and the Philippines.

Discharged from Navy in March of 1961.

Between 1961 and 1964:

Resided in northern Florida and Denver, Colorado.

Attended PENSACOLA JUNIOR COLLEGE in Florida.

Professional Music Associations

Between 1964 till 1966:

Joined SI ZENTNER’S orchestra in October, 1964.

Spent a total of 1.5 years with ZENTNER orchestra.

Performed with the GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA, directed by RAY McKINLEY, during the summer of 1965. Toured Japan and worked with several names during this period including:

  • BUDDY DeFRANCO
  • JUNE VALLI
  • SAMMY SHORE
  • ENZO STUARTI
  • JOAN SHEPPARD.

Rejoined SI ZENTNER and remained until April of 1966, while at the TROPICANA BLUE ROOM in Las Vegas.

While working with ZENTNER from 1964 to 1966, worked with and accompanied such name acts as:

  • ANN HOWARD
  • JERRY LESTER
  • JACKIE GAYLE
  • JOHNNY RAYE
  • JOHN BYNER
  • MEL TORME
  • PHILL FORD and MIMI HINES
  • RICHARD ALLEN.

Contributed many orchestral arrangements which were
preformed regularly with both the ZENTNER and McKINLEY bands.

Between 1966 till 1969:

Established residence in Las Vegas in April of 1966; was immediately engaged by LOUIS PRIMA in conjunction with his new contract at SANDS HOTEL.

Performed and recorded with LOUIS PRIMA and SAM BUTERA & THE WITNESSES from April, 1966 until January, 1969.

During this period, we performed at:

  • THE COPACANA, N.Y.C.
  • BIMBO’S, SAN FRANCISCO
  • PALMER HOUSE, CHICAGO
  • SANDS HOTEL, LAS VEGA (30 weeks a year)
  • HARRAH’S, RENO and TAHOE

Appeared with PRIMA several times on national T.V. shows such as:

  • THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW
  • THE JOEY BISHOP SHOW
  • THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW

Contributed arrangements for performance and recording while with PRIMA, including big band charts used on the JOEY BISHOP SHOW.

While employed with PRIMA, we performed with many guest artists who were invited by MR. PRIMA to perform with us, many of whom have remained personal friends through the years.
